Emergency
Preparedness Committee
A
City of Tullahoma Emergency Preparedness Committee exists to develop
strategies for dealing with a wide range of emergency-related issues,
as well as to enhance disaster preparedness among area residents.
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 11:45 at
the Tullahoma Municipal Building and are open to municipal and emergency
management professionals, interested citizens, and volunteers.
The formation and accomplishments of this Committee recently garnered
the City of Tullahoma an Excellence in Municipal Government Award
from the Tennessee City Management Association.
Advisory
radio station
The
City operates WPNY 1610 AM, a low wattage radio station. A Thunder
Eagle receiver is also connected to the system, allowing the city
to transmit NOAA forecasts and warnings directly over the informational
radio station. The NOAA forecast is a part of the 15-minute standard
message loop, but may be played continuously when threatening weather
is forecast for the area. During low threat periods, the station
airs community and municipal service information, including pre-disaster
information. In the event of an emergency situation, designated
persons have the option to access the stationís live broadcast mode.
Citizens
can also tune to 1610 AM for weather-related school closing messages,
information on power outages, and instructions in the aftermath
of an emergency situation. The radio comes equipped with its own
back-up generator in the event of an extended power outage. In
the event of a power outage during an emergency situation, use a
battery-powered radio to hear the 1610 broadcast or continue to
monitor a personal battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio. Should the
local Red Cross office make the decision to open shelters in the
wake of a tornado or weather-related disaster, that information
will be communicated over 1610.
Vortex
Outdoor Warning Siren System
The
Outdoor Warning Sirens are operated from the City of Tullahoma Police
Department, which is manned twenty-four hours per day. The siren
system is designed to alert those out-of-doors to an emergency situation.
Click here for a map of siren locations.
The
severe weather/other peacetime emergency warning is a 3-5 minute
steady signal. This ALERT signal warns the public to seek shelter
and turn on radio or television to listen for essential emergency
information.
The
City of Tullahoma outdoor warning siren system will sound the steady
alert tone in the event a National Weather Service tornado warning
is issued for the Tullahoma area. A NWS tornado warning indicates
that a tornado is occurring or is imminent in about thirty minutes
to an hour. Should you hear the warning tone, seek shelter immediately
and turn to a National Weather Service Broadcast for updates on
the weather situation. Continue to monitor the National Weather
Service broadcast to determine when the danger has passed.
The
warning sirens are routinely tested the second Saturday of each
month at noon, except in the event of inclement weather at that
time.
