Fire
Prevention
A
primary mission of the Tullahoma Fire Department is fire prevention.
Unwanted fires can cause personal tragedies and large monetary
losses. All fire department personnel are active in proactive
fire prevention efforts. The Fire Chief is the "fire
authority having jurisdiction" in Tullahoma. The Fire
Inspector is the field representative for the Fire Chief.
The Tullahoma Fire Inspector is certified by the State of
Tennessee Fire Marshalls Office.
The
Fire Chief and Shift Fire Captains coordinate fire prevention
activities, including public fire safety education, fire station
tours, fire safety talks to schools, civic and community groups,
and recognition of Fire Prevention Week. All Tullahoma citizens
are encouraged to take an active role in the prevention of
unwanted fires and the abatement of unsafe fire conditions.
To report fire prevention concerns please contact the Fire
Inspector at (931) 455-2648, ext . 105.
Commercial
Fire Safety Inspections
The
Fire Chief and Fire Inspector review new construction plans
for all commercial buildings and inspect new buildings prior
to occupancy in conjunction with the Planning and Codes Department.
New businesses are inspected after the City of Tullahoma Finance
Department issues a business license. Businesses that are
licensed to sell beer or wine are re-inspected annually. In
addition, other existing businesses are routinely inspected,
often by request of the business owner or a customer. The
Tullahoma Fire Department endeavors to educate, advise, and
recommend actions that will maintain the minimum life and
fire safety elements as required by the Tullahoma Municipal
Code. For new construction the 1994 Standard Building
Code, the 1994 Standard Fire Prevention Code, and
the 1994 Life Safety Code have been specifically
adopted by the Tullahoma Municipal Code. For existing
buildings the 1988 Standard Existing Building Code
and the 1994 Standard Fire Prevention Code are used
to determine life and fire safety code compliance. The Fire
Department maintains a current library of the National Fire
Prevention Associations codes as reference to the other
adopted codes.
Home
Fire Safety Inspections
Each
year, the majority of all U.S. fire deaths occur in one-and
two-family dwellings (Fire Protection Handbook, 17th edition).
In Tullahoma all dwellings, new and existing, must be protected
by approved properly installed residential-type smoke detectors.
The Tullahoma Fire Department offers free home fire safety
inspections to assist homeowners and tenants. The home visit
includes understanding the nature of fire behavior, how to
prevent unwanted fires, emergency egress of the building,
and conducting exit drills in the home. To arrange for a home
fire safety inspection please contact the Fire Inspector at
455-2648, ext. 105.
Fire
Code Enforcement
The
priority of fire code enforcement is to eliminate fire hazards.
Fire hazards are defined as "any thing or act which increases
or may cause an increase of the hazard or menace of fire to
a greater degree than that customarily recognized as normal
by persons in the public service regularly engaged in preventing,
suppressing, or extinguishing fire; or which may obstruct,
delay, hinder, or interfere with the operations of the Fire
Department or the egress of occupants in the event of a fire."
(1994 Standard Fire Prevention Code) It is the goal
of the Tullahoma Fire Department to assist business owners
and others charged with the responsibility of life and fire
safety with safety programs and the abatement of life/fire
safety hazards. On-site visits are conducted by appointment
prior to making a site inspection. Inspection procedures,
specific inspection areas, and responsibilities of the business/property
owner are reviewed and guidance and recommendations for the
correction of fire hazards and for fire/life safety code violations
are offered. Citations for non-compliance with the Tullahoma
Municipal Code are issued in the event fire hazard violations
are not ultimately corrected.
Fire
/Arson Investigation
The
fire department investigates all fires for cause determination.
The Fire Chief and Shift Captain (or Fire Scene Officer )
gather the appropriate information, conduct the investigation,
and submit a written report. If a fire is determined to be
of a suspicious nature, the Fire Chief enlists the aid of
the Tullahoma Police Department and the State of Tennessee
Fire Marshalls Office. In the event of a building fire
the Tullahoma Planning and Codes Department must make structural
inspections before the building can be further occupied. If
the structure is determined unsafe by the building official
or his representative, proper permits must be obtained from
the Planning and Codes Department prior to repairs or razing
of the building.
Fire
Reports
A
copy of a fire report may be obtained from the Fire Department
for a $5.00 fee, payable at Tullahoma Municipal Building.
Leaf
Burning
The
Fire Department monitors atmospheric conditions and determines
whether leaf burning in the city limits is permissible on
a daily basis. Call the fire station nearest to your residence
to obtain permission to burn leaves on your property.
